Activity 2.2: The use of verb to be with conjunctions (and & but)

In this activity, you must participate actively in the debate forum on use of verb to be with conjunctions and & but.

"And" is a conjunction in English that is use to join words, phrases, or clauses with relate meanings. 

Examples of how it's used:

1. Joining words:

   Apples and bananas are fruits.

    Juan and Maria are friends.

2. joining phrases:

     I like swimminng and running in the park.

     He studies English and French.

3. Joining clauses:

     I want to go to the movies, and she wants to stay home.

      He worked hard on the proyect, and his effort was rewarded.

"And" is used to add information or connect similar elements in a sentence. It can also be used to create lists of items or connect ideas within a paragraph.

"But" is a conjunction in English that is used to introduce an opposing or contrasting idea in a sentence. 

Examples of how it's used:

1. Contrast between two ideas:

     I like chocolate, but I don't like vanilla.

     She is smart, but sometimes forgetful.

2. Contrast within a phrase: 

      The day is sunny, but it's cold.

       He is wealthy, but he isn't happy.

"But" is used to indicate a change in the direction of thought or to introduce an idea that contrasts with the previous one. It´s an important word for expressing opposition, contrast, or contradiction in English discourse.

 Sentences that use the verb "to be," "but," and "and" in affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms within a school context:

Affirmative:

    1. The teacher is strict, but the students are hardworking.

     2. The school library is quiet and spacious.

     3. Our principal is kind, and the staff members are dedicated.

     4.  The cafeteria is clean, but the food is not always great.

Negative:

       1. The teacher is not lenient, but the students are not lazy.

       2. The school library is not chaotic, but it's not very organized.

       3. Our principal is not indifferent, and the staff members are not indifferent either.

       4. The cafeteria is not dirty, but the food is not consistently delicious.

Interrogative:

1. Is the teacher strict, and are the students hardworking?

2. Is the school library quiet, and is it spacious?

3. Is our principal kind, and are the staff members dedicated?

4. Is the cafeteria clean, but is the food appetizing?

 4.       Write the plural.

d)        I am a banker. We are bankers

e)        It is a box. They are boxes

5.        Correct the mistakes.

a)        Sarah and I am sisters.    Sarah and I are sisters

b)        Ben and Tim is at school. Ben and Tim are at school

c)        Horses and cows is animals.   Horses and cows are animals

d)        England are a country.  England is a country

e)        Tim are from America.  Tim is from America
